GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

The LABORER 1 does a wide variety of unskilled tasks requiring sustained physical effort and the use of hand tools and simple power equipment.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is the first level of a two-level series. The close supervision received, the absence of responsibility for maintaining detailed records of work performed, and the absence of responsibility for using or operating large power equipment distinguishes it from the higher level.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties listed below are not inclusive but characteristic of the type and level of work associated with the class. Individual positions may do all or some combination of the duties listed below as well as other related duties.

1. General Labor. Collects and disposes of debris and trash. Digs ditches. Cuts and hauls wood. Cleans walkways, restrooms, roofs, work areas. Hauls materials, breaks up concrete, erects scaffolding, builds rough forms, etc. to help skilled workers with building maintenance.żż
2. Warehouse Labor. Loads and unloads, trucks, ships using hand trucks, dollies, and other moving and loading equipment. Loads and unloads materials and merchandise from pallets and conveyor belts. Packs and unpacks boxes and containers. Stocks shelves. Counts warehouse stock to help with physical inventory.
3. Vehicle Servicing. Dispenses fuel and lubricants, cleans and washes vehicles, assists stranded motorists with jump-starting the car battery, unlock and wrecker services, screens returning vehicles for interior and body damage and operational and safety sufficiency.żż

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

The Laborer 1 works under close supervision. Most tasks are assigned orally and in detail orally. Work review is daily to see that it is completed satisfactorily and on time. As Laborer 1's learn repetitive tasks, supervision becomes more general.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS

The Laborer 1 has regular contact in person or by telephone with other employees in the work unit to exchange information about work assignments or to get additional instruction. The employee has occasional contact with employees in other units and the public to exchange information related to doing the assigned work.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Work occurs outdoors in all types of weather. It requires walking, standing, bending and stooping for extended periods, at times in confined spaces. Work occurs on ladders, scaffolds, and other aboveground locations. Employees may be exposed to dust, fumes, noise and unpleasant variation in temperature. Work requires lifting and carrying heavy objects. Some positions require working with or around chemicals and caustic compounds such as pesticides, herbicides, disinfectants, and cleaning agents.żż
