GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS The PAINTER performs skilled journey-level work in preparing and applying coating materials such as paint and varnish to metal, wood, glass, plaster, and masonry surfaces of buildings and other structures, equipment, furniture and woodwork in order to protect and beautify the surfaces. Employees in this class may apply specialized skills to a particular form or type of painting project. Examples include painting exclusively vehicles and equipment, freehand or silkscreen painting of signs, murals or other graphics, or serving exclusively as a touch-up painter. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES This is a single classification and not currently part of a series of classes. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS Employees in this class are in daily contact with all levels of staff to arrange work to be performed in areasoccupied by staff, to select paint colors, to clarify work orders and to answer questions, and with other trades workers, e.g., plumbers, electricians, carpenters, other maintenance staff and engineers to coordinate work schedules, review prints, and provide technical assistance. Employees in this class are in contact occasionally with private painting companies and contractors to order and pick up supplies, match paint samples and ask technical questions regarding materials. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Employees in this class receive general supervision, usually from an administrative superior. Work is assigned through work order slips and verbal discussion. Review of work varies from daily on-site reviews of progress and quality of work to final inspection of work at the completion of a job. Established rules, policies and Federal and State laws on safety, storing of paint and combustible materials, use of certain materials, and the control of inmates and patients at State institutions must be followed. GENERAL INFORMATION Positions are found in central and remote locations throughout State government (e.g., general government agencies, human or natural resource agencies, correctional, mental health, or higher education institutions, hospitals, etc.). They require the willingness to work within the environment associated with the position's location. They require the willingness to work outdoors in inclement weather. They require the willingness to walk, stand and work while bending and stooping for extended periods. They require the willingness to work from ladders, scaffolds, and other above ground locations such as on roofs. They require the willingness to work in an environment containing dust, odor, and high levels of noise. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
