GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

The SHEETMETAL WORKER performs skilled journey-level work in the fabrication, alteration and repair of sheetmetal building parts, articles, and equipment such as stove pipes, grates, chimney caps, dishwashing sinks, window guards and gutters. Work may be performed in the sheetmetal shop, or inside or outside of State buildings.

This is a single classification and not currently part of a series of classes.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Sheetmetal Fabrication and Repairs. Typical tasks: reads blueprints; estimates and orders supplies necessary to perform assignment; fabricates, installs, and repairs sheetmetal building parts, articles, and equipment such as stove pipes, grates, chimney caps, downspout gutters, machine guards, roofing ventilators, window guards, metal doors and windows, galvanized metal and corrugated roofing and skylight flashing. Some positions in this class may occasionally use welding equipment in the performance of tasks.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS

Employees in this class have regular in-person contact with agency staff and clients in order to minimize disruption to unit operations. Sheetmetal Workers also have regular in-person contact with members of other trades to prioritize tasks.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Sheetmetal Workers receive general supervision from the plant operations supervisor. Work is assigned verbally or through written work orders. Work is reviewed weekly for progress and quality and for compliance with State building codes, regulations and policies of agency.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Positions are found in central and remote locations throughout State government (e.g., general government agencies, human or natural resource agencies, correctional, mental health, or higher education institutions, hospitals, etc.). They require the willingness to work within the environment associated with the position's location. They require the willingness to work outdoors in inclement weather. They require the willingness to walk, stand, and work while bending and stooping for extended periods. They require the willingness to work from ladders, scaffolds, and other above ground locations such as roofs. They require the willingness to work in an environment containing dust, odor, and high levels of noise. They require the willingness to lift and carry heavy objects.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Two years of experience as a journey-level sheet metal worker; OR
• Four years of assistant-level sheet metal fabrication experience

The training and/or experience must show:

• knowledge of sheet metal hazards and safety precautions;
• knowledge of mathematics used to produce layouts;
• knowledge of mechanical drawing;
• knowledge of soldering techniques;
• skill working with sheet metal;
• skill using sheet metal tools and equipment;
• skill reading and applying written instructions;
• skill repairing sheet metal equipment.
