GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

The LOCKSMITH installs, maintains and repairs lock and key systems and related door hardware in a State institution.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is a single classification and not currently part of a series of classes.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Lockset Rekeying. Typical tasks: researches records to insure that other keys on record will not inadvertently operate lockset; changes record to show new key number and date changed; checks cylinder cores to insure they are within acceptable tolerances; alters cylinder to change combination; produces key to open lock.
2. Lockset Maintenance and Repair. Typical tasks: inspects locks; replaces or repairs tumblers, springs and other parts as required; changes lock combinations as needed by installing new pin segments; makes new or duplicate keys on key cutting machine; makes pin cylinders; operates key cutting machinery (spinning cutting wheels and pneumatic stamping machines).
3. Miscellaneous. Typical tasks: changes combinations of safes and vaults; services, maintains and tempers devices on safes and vaults; maintains proper inventory levels of locks, key blanks and repair parts; keeps records on all keys and recipients; may be responsible for total key control program in an agency including planning, designing, implementing, maintaining and documenting agency-wide master lock and key systems; may coordinate the work of helpers.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS

Employees in this class are in daily in-person contact with agency personnel and students, housing personnel and campus faculty regarding key matters, and weekly in-person contact with carpenters regarding installation of locking devices.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Employees in this class receive general supervision from a locksmith supervisor. Assignments are received daily and work is reviewed for professional quality and timely completion. Employees in this class use agency policies, safety rules and locksmith technical manuals to complete their work. State and Federal regulations must also be followed concerning access to key control of radioactive areas.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Positions are found in central and remote locations throughout State government (e.g., general government agencies, human or natural resource agencies, correctional, mental health, or higher education institutions, hospitals, etc.). They require the willingness to work within the environment associated with the position's location. They require the willingness to work outdoors in inclement weather. They require the willingness to work in an environment containing dust, odor, and high levels of noise.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Two years of experience as a journey-level Locksmith; OR
• Completion of an approved apprenticeship program.
