GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

The AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC 1 performs basic preventive maintenance and routine repair work on automobiles, trucks and other motorized equipment used in the field for transportation, hauling, and maintenance purposes.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is the first level of a two-level series. It is distinguished from the higher level by concentrating on basic preventive maintenance (e.g., performing oil changes, rotating tires, checking brakes, exhaust system and electrical system) and performing simple repairs such as adjusting or replacing clutch, minor tune-ups, and replacing head lights. (As employees in this class advance in proficiency they may, on occasion, under close supervision, perform more complicated repairs.)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Vehicle Maintenance and Repair. Typical tasks: replaces headlights; performs lube jobs and oil changes and replaces oil filters; performs minor engine tune-ups; replaces axle bearings; repairs flat tires; services locks, latches, transmissions, clutches, cooling systems; replaces shock absorbers with new ones.
2. Miscellaneous. Typical tasks: under close guidance assists Automotive Mechanic 2 in pulling engines, transmissions, differentials, and assists Automotive Mechanic 2 in putting repaired parts back in vehicle; assists Body and Fender Repair Worker in preparing vehicle for painting by doing rough sanding and prep work.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS

Employees in this class have daily in-person contact with other State employees regarding vehicle repairs and complaints.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Employees in this class receive general supervision from an administrative superior. They receive assignments throughout the day, and their work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion to insure that the work has been done correctly. Employees in this class use established guidelines, various vehicle repair manuals, and standard trade and safety practices in performing the duties of the job.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Positions are found in central and remote locations throughout State government (e.g., general government agencies, human or natural resource agencies, correctional, mental health, or higher education institutions, hospitals, etc.). They require the willingness to work within the environment associated with the position's location. They require the willingness to work in an environment containing dust, grime, odors, fumes, and high levels of noise. They require the willingness to work overhead while lying on one's back under vehicles. They require the willingness to be on one's feet for extended periods. They require the willingness to lift heavy objects on a regular basis. They require the willingness to work outdoors on busy roadways, perhaps in inclement weather, when performing road service calls and repairs.

MINIMUM  QUALIFICATIONS

• Two yea5rs of mechanic experience diagnosing and performing routine repair work on automobiles, trucks, or industrial equipment; OR
• Completion of an approved automotive mechanic program from an accredited institution and one year of mechanic experience.

The training and experience should show a majority of the following:

• Skill using automotive mechanical and electronic tools and equipment.
• Skill repairing and maintaining vehicles.
• Skill diagnosing routine vehicle problems.
