GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS
The CAMPUS DISPATCHER maintains two-way radio contact with campus certified officers,
monitors campus alarms, and operates the telephones and communications equipment in a communications center of
a State educational facility. Duties are usually performed in a normal work setting.
This is a single classification and not currently part of a series of classes.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Allocation of positions to this class will depend on the total work performed which
may include one or a combination of the duties or tasks listed below.
- Radio Dispatch. Typical tasks: answers
phone calls and complaints (e.g., disturbances, parking violations) and dispatches security officers, police and/or
student patrols as necessary; obtains assistance from city, county or State police as needed through radio dispatch
or telephone; receives requests from campus certified officers to obtain information on status of persons and property
(e.g., driver's license check, criminal history, wants and warrants, automobile ownership); accesses the Law Enforcement
Data System or other telecommunications equipment to obtain information and relays information to officer; calls
for fire or ambulance response when required by security personnel or alarms.
- Alarms and Information. Typical tasks:
monitors intrusion, fire and equipment alarms and emergency elevator phones and takes prescribed action (e.g.,
dispatches officers, assists with notification of appropriate staff, faculty, physical plant and repair personnel);
answers general information questions from the public concerning parking regulations, campus security regulations,
building locations and campus activities; monitors fire and police agencies' radio frequencies to be aware of activities
that may effect the campus.
- Miscellaneous. Typical tasks: maintains
a radio log of calls, noting time, location and action taken; enters crime and property status information into
the computer; types daily bulletin of activities and occurrences of interest to the security department; updates
emergency call/response list; files records, reports and office information as required; updates a schedule of
campus activities; maintains lost and found property log and cabinet; issues temporary parking permits and processes
parking citations; serves as backup to crisis line when interventionist is on break.
RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS
Employees in this class have regular contact by phone and in-person with the general
public, staff, faculty and students seeking assistance or information. There is occasional contact with city and
State police and other agency emergency response personnel in order to exchange information and/or seek assistance.
Employees in this class receive general supervision from a security supervisor
through daily reviews of bulletins and logs to assure that records are complete and clear. By daily observation,
the supervisor assures that dispatching and office functions are following established policies and procedures.
Employees in this class have access to Law Enforcement Data Systems manuals, telecommunications equipment manuals,
administrative and department rules and regulations and the laws effecting campus security in order to provide
correct information and assistance within the guidelines of the campus security department.
