The BOAT OPERATOR maintains and operates an oceanographic research boat of less than 65 feet to meet scheduled requirements for scientific research.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is a single classification and not currently part of a series of classes.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Boat Operator. Typical tasks: operates mechanical and electronic systems in the boat to provide proper navigation; maneuvers boat as necessary to accomplish work of the scientific party; operates radio telephone, loran, depth-recorder, radar, diesel engine, winch, pumps, and other on-board equipment; instructs and supervises scientific party in boat safety and proper use of equipment; ensures scientific equipment is properly stowed.
2. Boat Maintenance. Typical tasks: cleans and paints boat to maintain the boat's appearance and condition, assists port staff in the maintenance of machinery and equipment as directed; completes logs on equipment and boat usage and ensures preventive maintenance meets prescribed schedules.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS

Employees in this class have daily contact with scientific staff and crew at sea performing experiments. Work is assigned and performed on the boat or while in port.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Employees in this class receive general supervision from the Port Engineer daily. Work is evaluated for efficiency and effectiveness by reports from participating scientists and direct observation of the boat's condition. Operation of the boat and equipment must comply with established navigational and safety procedures.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Positions in this class are found on ships conducting research at sea for extended periods of time. They require the willingness to work within the environment associated with the position's location.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Possess an Operator Uninspected Passenger Vessels' license issued by the U.S. Coast Guard, and a Marine Radio Operator's permit issued by the Federal Communications Commission
• Merchant Mariners Document (Ordinary Seaman, Wiper, Food Handler or higher)
• Current STCW certificate including Basic Safety Training certificate
• Valid driver's license
• Meet Coast Guard drug testing requirements
• Ability to speak, read and write English
• Basic computer skills including use of e-mail, web browsers, word processing
