GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

The LAUNDRY WORKER performs general laundry service of washing and finishing clothes and linens in a laundry facility.

This is a single classification and not currently part of a series of classes.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Allocation of positions to this class will depend on the total work performed which may include one or a combination of the duties or tasks listed below.

1. Laundry Activities. Typical tasks: picks up soiled laundry; sorts soiled laundry according to type and color of material; treats stains on laundry; loads washing machine with soiled laundry; adds detergent and/or bleach, bluing, and other additives to machines and sets/resets cycle controls; removes clean clothes from washers; removes stained laundry to be rewashed; places laundry in dryers; removes clothes from dryers; folds, flattens, and/or stacks clean, dry clothing/linens; checks laundry for tears, holes, missing buttons, and broken zippers; loads clean clothing/linens into laundry carts or bags for distribution to designated areas.
2. Miscellaneous. Typical tasks: cleans washing machines and dryers; sweeps and mops floors in working area; may operate air hose to clean under and in washing machines and dryers; performs light maintenance and repair on washers and dryers; trains residents or student workers in proper use of machines.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS

Employees in this class have daily in-person contact with students or residents to pick up and/or deliver laundry.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Employees in this class receive close to general supervision from a supervisor who assigns work verbally or through written instructions. Work is reviewed on a daily basis to ensure that laundry procedures are followed accurately and efficiently.
Employees in this class follow agency laundry policies and procedures, State health, safety, and sanitation regulations, and washer/dryer instruction manuals when operating laundry equipment.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Positions are found in central and remote locations throughout State government (e.g., general government agencies, human or natural resource agencies, correctional, mental health, or higher education institutions,hospitals, etc.). They require the willingness to work within the environment associated with the position's location. This includes the willingness to work in the environment of laundry or laundry room; to perform moderate to heavy lifting; and to stand for extended periods of time.
