GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

The RETAIL STORE ASSISTANT oversees activities of a retail store operation which sells items such as candy, pop, popcorn, greeting cards, school supplies, magazines, and toiletries.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Store Operations. Typical tasks: operates a till for a cash transaction or may complete necessary paperwork for a bank card (e.g., VISA/Mastercharge) transaction; oversees work of student employees and classified employees to assure they operate the till and count money accurately; delegates tasks to these employees such as picking up supplies from the storeroom or stocking shelves; charts sales of items and promotional endeavors; introduces new marketing items to the store.
2. Inventory. Typical tasks: orders supplies for the store, reviews invoices for accuracy, stocks shelves, takes inventory of store supplies, and prepares till reports at the end of each workday.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS

Employees in this class have constant, daily, in person contact with students, faculty, staff, and the public who purchase items from the store. Employees in this class have daily contact in person and by telephone with other agency departments to make cash deposits, invoice payments, or for purchasing. These employees have frequent contact in person and by telephone with vendors while placing orders for store supplies.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Employees in this class work under the general supervision of an administrative superior who assigns work verbally and occasionally, in writing. Work is reviewed through daily observation, through daily till reports, monthly inventory reports, and frequent informal meetings to insure tasks and procedures are done in a timely and efficient manner. Employees in this class must comply with State and agency cash handling procedures, store policies and procedures, inventory control guidelines, and State and agency purchasing guidelines.
