GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS The SHIP'S ASSISTANT COOK assists the Cook/Steward in preparing and serving meals for the crew and staff on an oceanographic research vessel. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES This is the first of a two-level series. This class is distinguished from the Ship's Cook level by the absence of responsibility for planning and preparing complete meals. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS Employees in this class have occasional contact with food vendors. Work is assigned and completed on board the ship. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Employees in this class receive general supervision from the Ship's Master. Daily assignments, coordination, and review of work is provided by the Ship's Cook, who in turn reports to the Ship's Master. Work is reviewed daily for cleanliness and conformance to health standards required for an oceanographic vessel. GENERAL INFORMATION Positions in this class are found on ships conducting research at sea for extended periods of time. They require the willingness to work within the environment associated with the position's location. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS At least six months of experience as a cook's helper; OR
