GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

The SHIP'S ELECTRICIAN installs, maintains, and repairs electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures on an oceanographic research vessel.

This is a single classification and not currently part of a series of classes.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Electrical Maintenance. Typical tasks: operates shipboard electrical equipment; maintains and repairs electrical circuitry, motors, and generators using standard and special electrical equipment, such as volt meters, ammeters, and power factor meters; prepares check off list of preventative maintenance for engineers to follow; installs motors and generators; dresses and polishes commutators; replaces brushes; rewinds and replaces coils and armatures on electrical motors.
2. Watch Standing. Typical tasks: stands watch as the roving engineer; assumes responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the engineering plant, including constant checks on pressures and temperatures, fuel consumption, and conditions of operating machinery to ensure economical, safe, and efficient operation; keeps engineering logs and records.
3. Miscellaneous. Typical tasks: keeps records of circuitry, equipment, and supplies inventory; recommends purchase of equipment and supplies; assists In fire fighting and maintenance of fire fighting equipment.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS

Employees in this class have daily contact with research scientists and students while at sea to repair equipment as needed. All other contact is with the ship's crew. Duties are assigned and completed on board the ship.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Employees in this class receive general supervision from a supervisory level engineer. Repair and maintenance work is examined upon completion for compliance with current electrical codes. Work is performed under the standards set in the vessel's operating manual.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Positions in this class are found on ships conducting research at sea for extended periods of time. They require the willingness to work within the environment associated with the position's location.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a Merchant Mariner's Document endorsed as Electrician, issued by the U.S. Coast Guard.
