GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS The SHIP'S ELECTRICIAN installs, maintains, and repairs electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures on an oceanographic research vessel. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES This is a single classification and not currently part of a series of classes. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS Employees in this class have daily contact with research scientists and students while at sea to repair equipment as needed. All other contact is with the ship's crew. Duties are assigned and completed on board the ship. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Employees in this class receive general supervision from a supervisory level engineer. Repair and maintenance work is examined upon completion for compliance with current electrical codes. Work is performed under the standards set in the vessel's operating manual. GENERAL INFORMATION Positions in this class are found on ships conducting research at sea for extended periods of time. They require the willingness to work within the environment associated with the position's location. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Possession of a Merchant Mariner's Document endorsed as Electrician, issued by the U.S. Coast Guard. |
