GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS The STATIONARY ENGINEER performs skilled journey-level work in the operation, repair, and maintenance of high-pressure steam boilers, chillers, and associated machinery, tools, and equipment. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES This is a single classification and not currently part of a series of classes. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS Employees in this class have regular in-person contact with agency staff and clients to minimize disruption of work unit. They have regular in-person contact with members of other trades to prioritize and coordinate work assignments. Employees in this class have regular in-person or phone contact with suppliers and salespeople when requisitioning supplies or learning of new products. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Employees in this class receive general supervision from the unit supervisor or other administrative superior. Work is assigned verbally or through written work orders. Work is reviewed through feedback from agency staff for quality, timeliness, and compliance to fire codes, building codes, and agency regulations, policies, and guidelines. Employees in this class exercise independence in judgment and action to complete assigned tasks. GENERAL INFORMATION Positions in this class require the willingness to work in an environment containing dust, grime, odor, fumes, draft, and high levels of noise. They require the willingness to walk, stand, and work while bending and stooping for extended periods. They require the willingness to lift and carry heavy objects. They require the willingness to work from ladders, scaffolds, and above ground locations. They require the willingness to work overhead while lying on one's back. They require the willingness to work outdoors in inclement weather. They require the willingness to work in confined spaces. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Two years of experience operating and maintaining a high-pressure boiler system and auxiliary equipment which shows: - knowledge of high-pressure steam boiler systems operations; - knowledge of safety practices while operating and maintaining steam boiler systems and auxiliary equipment; - knowledge of how to perform chemical analysis of water.
