GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

The PRODUCTION CONTROL SCHEDULER 2 performs computer production control functions such as scheduling and executing routine and special computer production programs, maintaining various logs and analyzing and correcting computer job failures and maintains computer tapes or disk files.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is the second level of a two-level series. It is distinguished from the lower level by the requirement to independently analyze and correct job failures to ensure continuous operations. At this level, employees may act as system administrators in agencies with mini-computer systems. Additionally, employees at this level may train new Production Control Schedulers in daily routines and special job run procedures.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties listed below are not inclusive but characteristic of the type and level of work associated with this class. Individual positions may perform all or some combination of the duties listed below as well as other related duties.

  1. Operations. Maintain a log of data processing requests. Verify that computer program documentation is current, review flow charts for sequence of materials needed for machine operations and set up job control language (JCL) or other command language according to flow chart or other documents. Enter JCL instructions in the terminal or card reader and check quality of input and output by comparing documents and products against standard. Assure distribution of output and act as liaison between computer operations and user, as necessary. Identify and research problems in producing specific programs and perform backup procedures on various types of computers. Develop special reports using Easytrieve Plus or report programs on a mini-computer. Review JCL for errors and make corrections. Perform tape library functions, such as identifying, filing, or retrieving document tape usage.
  2. Job Failure Analysis/Correction. Identify causes of job failures, make necessary changes to correct the problem or determine when to call in more highly-trained staff to correct the problem. Declare a computer run bad if it fails the quality control verifications and independently stage and schedule special user runs.
  3. Production Control Support Activities. Participate in setting up the computer operations schedule. Maintain and update operating procedures and train new employees on agency programs and job standards. Meet with users to explain new job processing features. Design computer forms to ensure compliance with postal, banking, and agency requirements and regulations. Write bid specifications providing information for General Services and the Printing Division to acquire preprinted forms for agency processing. Serve on various bid evaluation teams to select vendors to provide services and/or supplies to data processing departments.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS

Employees in this class have daily in-person or telephone contact with staff at Computer Centers, other units within the agency, and private data processing organizations. They have occasional telephone, written or in-person contact with staff of other governmental units and private industry organizations with data reporting responsibilities required either by contract or Oregon Revised Statute, e.g., tax reports, labor market reports, and Federal grant reporting requirements.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Supervision is provided during prime shift hours by a Production Control Supervisor or department manager. During other shifts, supervision is provided by telephone or on site.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Positions in this class require the willingness to work in an environment where there is a moderate noise level and to lift up to 45 pounds. These jobs require the ability to perform accurately on repetitive tasks. Some positions may require the willingness to work different shifts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • One year of experience and/or training in production control using Job Control Language (JCL) which included scheduling and executing computer production programs.
