GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

The SEAMSTER 1 alters and mends clothing or other items, and may sew new items or simple garments when needed.


DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is the first level of a two-level series. It is distinguished from the higher level by the performance of simple sewing tasks, such as mending; by the absence of responsibility for designing and cutting patterns; and by the limited responsibility for constructing garments.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Clothing and Linen Repair. Typical tasks: mends, patches, and repairs all garments and linen which are repairable; mends rips and torn seams in clothing; applies patches to worn clothing; hems garments; takes in or lets out seams in clothing; attaches snaps and grommets to clothing.
  2. Sewing. Typical tasks: alters garments to fit properly; sews curtains and drapes; may cut out simple garments following a pattern and construct garments.
  3. Maintenance. Typical tasks: cleans and oils sewing machine; vacuums and sweeps work area.


RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS

The Seamster 1 has regular contact in person or by telephone with other employees in the work unit to exchange information about work assignments and get or give additional instructions.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Employees in this class usually work under close supervision. Work is reviewed to assure sewing is of satisfactory quality and that work orders are completed in a reasonable amount of time. Operating manuals or instruction sheets are followed for correct operation of sewing machine and sewing procedures for zippers, snaps, grommets, and buttons.


GENERAL INFORMATION

Positions require sitting for extended periods of time while performing job duties and to safely perform moderate to heavy lifting.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

No specific education or experience is required for entry into this class. However, applicants must be able to work under conditions listed below.


WORKING CONDITIONS


Must be able to work under the following conditions with or without accommodations. See well enough for repetitive tasks. Read sufficiently to understand and follow instruction sheets and procedure manuals. Sit or stand for extended periods while performing duties. Use hands and fingers to operate sewing machines and handle thread, fabric, scissors, and other sewing aids. Lift 25 to 50 pounds when necessary.
